 Spring Scissors For Ragging

Rag quilt-
for 9" cut blocks and 8" finished blocks

Large Throw- 56"x56" need 49 blocks cut at 9" square.  7 blocks by 7 blocks
3 1/2 yards each of top  backing and batting-

Twin - 64"x88" need 88 blocks cut at 9" square.  8 blocks by 11 blocks
6 yards each of top  backing and batting

Double- 80"x88"  need 110 blocks cut 9" square.  10 blocks by 11 blocks
7 1/2 yards each top  backing and batting

Math is   4 ea 9" strips per yard and 4 ea 9" blocks per strip = 16 blocks per yard    If you buy 1/2 yard cuts make   sure they are cut straight or a little over size so you get 2 ea 9" strips per 1/2 yard cut.  You can adjust size of quilt by adding blocks or reducing blocks- just use the math to determine yardage and blocks needed

***** cut top and backing fabric 9" square  ******and cut batting at 8" square*******

Rag quilt -
for 10" cut blocks and 9" finished blocks-  This is a good block size as LAYER CAKES ARE PRE- CUT TO 10"

Large throw 63"x63"  need 49 blocks cut 10" square.  7 blocks by 7 blocks
4 1/2 yards each top   back and batting

Twin- 63"x90"  need 70 blocks cut 10" square.  7  blocks x 10 blocks
6 1/2 yards each   top  back  and batting

Double-  81"x90"  need 90 blocks cut 10" square   9 blocks x 10 blocks
8 yards each top back and batting

Math is  3 ea 10" strips per yard and 4 ea 10 blocks per strip = 12 blocks per yard.  1/2 yards cuts don't work well as you only get 1 10" strip per 1/2 yard cut.
HOWEVER-  layer cakes work really well- they usually have 40 to 42  10" squares per cake.  You can add squares needed from fabric on hand or additional fabric you purchase.   You can adjust size of quilt by adding more blocks or reducing blocks-  just use the math to determine yardage and blocks needed

****** Cut top and backing fabric to 10" squares ***** cut batting to 9" squares*******

If you need to piece a block or want to add half square triangles that is ok just square your block to the size you need.  Be creative

Supply list-  fabric and batting per cut to size-  thread and at least 3 filled bobbins
90 x14 needle  or 100/16- jeans needle   walking foot  **** AND a pair of Fiskars easy action Rag Quilt Snip for tabletop cutting- available at Joann or Amazon about $18.00 if on sale.   You will need these for the jeans quilt also.

Jeans Circle Quilt-  supply list

10 to 14 pairs of adult jeans- or denim fabric to cut 168 ea 7" circles.   168 each 5" assorted print squares -  NOTE charm packs are cut to 5"
lightweight batting cut into 168 ea 4 1/2" squares
